Adding Lights

(Note:  Lighting can only be viewed in Presentation View)

Click on the Library Menu Item and choose the Accessories Library.  At the top, you will see a heading for Lighting.  Under that heading there are a variety of lights available to be placed around your job.  Each lighting unit has an intensity control, think of this as wattage.  Some have an angle question as well, this is the cone of light emanating from the unit.

Adjusting Lights

In addition to adjustments that can be made to the light intensity of each lighting unit, there is an overall intensity that can be set for the whole room.  When you click on 3-D, there is an options button at the of form.  Click on the Options button and you will see in the middle of the form a slider that controls the overall lighting.

This slider controls the amount of room, or ambient light.  Putting it at 100 (Soft), means that the custom lighting will have no effect.  Putting the slider at 0 means that there will be very little ambient light and the custom lighting is most pronounced.  Typically you will want to have the slider set in the middle.  This will give you a dramatic effect with your custom lighting and yet still be light enough to see the details of your cabinetry.

Lighting Hints

Custom lighting can take some trial and error.  Recessed lights will put a spot light in a specific area this can create dramatic lighting but might not show off your cabinets very well.  Ceiling lights can light a room up but be very plain.  Using a combination of both types of lights, or using many recessed lights to highlight various areas of your design is usually the best way to go.  Try it out, don't be afraid to add lights, you can always erase them later.
