To add or change a wall you must first open the Wall Screen. The ability to add a wall, by attaching one to another, is made easy with KCDw. There are two ways to add a wall to the job screen area. One is the Keyboard method the other is Drag and Drop.
Adding Walls: Drag and Drop: At the top of the Unit's menu list, place the mouse pointer on the Add Wall button then click the left mouse button. This activates the button. Now move the mouse pointer to the job screen area and as you do this look to the bottom the Unit menu list. The wall's X,Y location appears there and change as you move around the screen. Next place the mouse pointer where you want the wall to start, then hold down the left mouse button, and drag. The number at the bottom of the Unit menu list is no longer the X, Y location, it is the wall's length.
Try this example: 1. Click on the add wall button located above the unit menu. 2. Click anywhere in the white design area and hold the mouse button down 3. Drag the mouse from left to right and look at the bottom of the length for the length 4. When the wall is the size you want release the mouse button. 5. Verify the information in the wall window on the right and click OK for the wall to draw.
Change a Wall:
· To change a wall from the main menu bar, click on the Change Menu Item and then click on the Change Wall item. This opens the Wall screen. By using the wall number, select the Wall that is to be changed. The details of the wall to be changed will display in the wall screen. Edit each item of the wall by making changes in the appropriate box. When all the changes have been made click OK to accept these changes.
· Another way to bring up the wall screen is to place the mouse pointer on the selected wall then double click the left mouse button. This opens the wall screen displaying the information for the wall that is to be changed. If the wrong wall opens press cancel and go back to the job screen area. Check to be sure your mouse pointer is on the wall to be changed then again double click the left mouse. The selected wall should appear in the wall screen. Make the necessary changes then Click OK to accept these changes.
To Move a Wall: 1. Go to the floorplan view. 2. Click and hold the mouse button down on the middle of the wall (not near the left or right end). 3. Move the mouse where the new wall should be. 4. Release the mouse button to place the wall at the new location.
Any wall can be moved after you have designed it. From the floorplan view click and hold the left mouse button down on the middle of the wall (not the ends) and drag the wall where you would like it. You can then move the wall to the end of another wall so they are now connected. The wall will "snap to" the end of any other wall you move it close to. Moving a wall will move it as is, you may find you will also need to change the walls angle also. A wall cannot be moved when looking at the elevation views, you must be at the floorplan view.
To Change a Wall Angle: 1. Go to the floorplan view. 2. Click and hold the mouse button down on the right or left edge of the wall (not the middle) 3. Drag the wall in a direction to get the angle you need. The wall will pivot on the opposite edge of the wall. 4. Release the mouse button to accept the new wall angle.
Wall angle decides where and which way a wall runs on your screen. If a wall is not in the direction you want it to be you can change the way it is angled. For example if a wall is running across the top of your screen and you want it on the right hand side of the screen running from top to bottom you will need to change the walls angle and then probably move the wall. Follow the directions above to change a wall's angle and then move a wall. A wall's angle cannot be changed when looking at the elevation views, you must be at the floorplan view.
Erase a Wall When at the elevation or floorplan view click and hold your mouse button down on any open space on the wall and drag the mouse over the KCDw trash bin. When the mouse is over the KCDw trash bin in the lower left corner of the screen, release the button to erase the wall.

Flip 180 degrees - Clicking on this button will turn the wall around on the exact same point and it will be located in the exact same part of your screen. This is useful if you have placed a wall up at angle 0 and want it angle 180 Move units with wall - When you move the wall, unless there is a check mark in this box, units will not move with it.
Making Walls Active
Active walls are used to place cabinets and other units. When you are designing you must place units on one wall at a time and walls must be placed prior to placing units. There are two parts to every wall, the front and the back of the wall. To make the front of the wall active you can simply type in the walls number. To make the back of a wall active type the letter b and then the wall number. There are always two active parts of every wall, the front and the back, whether it is a peninsula or a regular wall.
From the Floorplan View:
Making a wall active Click on the wall that you want active. The wall will now become gray. the gray wall is always the active wall. The active wall can now have units placed on it. Remember, you must place the mouse pointer inside the wall rectangle and click the left mouse button to make a wall active. To see which wall is the active wall look below the unit menu in the lower right corner of the KCDw® window.
Switching to the Elevation of a wall Move your mouse pointer to any white design area that doesn't have a cabinet or wall on it and double-click the left mouse button. You will now be looking at the elevation of the active wall. To see the active wall's number look in the lower right hand corner of the KCDw® window below the unit menu. When you double-click on any open white design space you will switch from elevation to floorplan.
From the Elevation View:
Making a wall active If the front view of the wall you are looking at has walls connected to it on the left or right you will see diagonal lines on the edge where it is joined. If you place your mouse over the diagonal lines in the tall rectangle and click your mouse button, you will make that wall active. Look in the lower right hand corner in the gray box to see what the wall number for that wall is. Any wall that is joined to another wall can be clicked on to make the wall active. If walls are not joined, it is necessary for you to switch to the floorplan view to make a wall active using the mouse. Remember, you can always type in a wall's number to make it active.
Making the back of a wall active To make the back of a wall active from the elevation, move your mouse pointer on the wall and click your right mouse button. A left click on the wall will then take you back to the front when your at the back of the wall.
Changing Wall Colors
Double Click on the Wall, this brings up the Change/Add Wall menu. Click on the More button. The Click on the Change Wall Color button. This brings up the color change box. Use the mouse pointer, or the up and down arrow keys on the keyboard, then highlight and click Wall Color from the name list. The color screen is now set on wall color and changes can be made. If you want to save this color permanently, click on the Save as Permanent Color Button.
Or
From the Main Menu Bar, with the mouse pointer select Change Menu Item then highlight and click Set Colors. This opens the Color screen. Use the mouse pointer, or the up and down arrow keys on the keyboard, then highlight and click Wall Color from the name list. The color screen is now set on wall color and changes can be made. The large color box displays the present wall color.
To view colors from the color list place the mouse pointer on the up and down arrows beside the word list and scroll the list. Choose a color square by clicking the mouse pointer on that square. The selected color displays in the large color box and the previous color moves to the box labeled last color. Next use the color palette to make shade variations to the selected color.
Color Palette: The color palette works by adding or subtracting color from the selected color. Every stripe will add or subtract color. The squares closest to the center line (the horizontal break between the four rows) will make a slight change while the squares at the outer edges will make the greatest. Every time a color square is selected it replaces the color in the large color box with new color and moves the previous color to the last color box. The palette will then change to match shade variations for the selected color square. This allows for a more accurate color selection.
HINT: Islands/Peninsulas behave the same way as walls in most respects. Their angles can be changed and they can be moved or erased in the same manner listed above. The differences between Islands/Peninsulas and walls are listed below. For more information on putting up Islands and Peninsulas, check out, How Do I Design a Peninsula.
Differences between Islands/Peninsulas and Walls
HINT: There are two ways to make the back of an island active. 1. If you type the letter 'B' on the keyboard and the number of the island, this will make the back active.
